Pool repair costs in Cape Town: what moves the quote
We do not publish pool repair prices. Here is why, and here are the factors that decide what a contractor will quote you.
Why we do not publish prices
We are a referral service. The contractors we refer set their own prices, and a price on a website is only useful if the contractor stands behind it. Until contractors confirm figures in writing, we will not publish any. A number that looks precise but has no source does more harm than good: it anchors your expectations and makes a fair quote look wrong.
What we can do is explain what moves a quote, so you can compare quotes properly and ask the right questions.
Diagnosis comes first
The biggest single factor is whether the problem is known. A broken light is easy to price. A pool that loses water could be a two-minute fitting or a buried pipe under the paving. A contractor who diagnoses first, through a bucket, dye or pressure test, can quote the repair accurately. One who guesses either prices in the risk or comes back with extras later. Paying for a proper diagnosis is often what makes the repair cheaper. See pool leak detection.
The pool itself
- Size and depth. Surface work is priced largely on area, so a long, deep pool costs more to resurface than a plunge pool.
- Surface type. Marbelite, fibreglass, tiles and paint need different materials, skills and preparation.
- Age and condition. Older pools hide extra work: old fittings, thin surfaces, original pipes.
- Shape and features. Steps, benches, infinity edges and water features add time and complexity.
The site
Access. Can materials and equipment reach the pool easily, or does everything go through the house, up steps or down a slope? Rubble has to come out the same way. Steep sites, as in Hout Bay, and big gardens with long access routes, as in Bishopscourt, take more labour.
Ground and groundwater. In low-lying, sandy areas near the coast, such as Table View and Milnerton, the water table can be high. Draining a pool there needs care and sometimes dewatering, which should be a visible line on the quote. Clay ground, in parts of the Northern Suburbs, can mean a crack has a cause that also needs fixing.
Distance. Travel time to your suburb and the contractor's call-out terms affect smaller jobs most.
Parts and equipment
For pump, filter and chlorinator work, the make and model matter. Common parts for popular brands are usually easy to get. Parts for old or rare equipment may be scarce, and sometimes replacement is the only sensible option. A new pump may need plumbing changes if its connections differ. Electrical work, which should be done by a qualified person, is a separate cost. See pool pump and equipment repair.
Scope creep and how to avoid it
Some extra work only becomes visible once a pool is drained or paving is lifted: a crack under the old surface, a corroded fitting, a rotten pipe. That is normal. What matters is how it is handled. A good quote says what is included, what is not, and how unexpected work will be priced and approved. Ask for that in writing, and ask the contractor to stop and get your approval before doing anything extra.
Season
Cape Town pool contractors are busiest from spring to late summer. Demand affects availability more than anything else, and urgent work in December is harder to book. Planning renovations and resurfacing for late winter or early spring, and having equipment checked before the heat arrives, gives you more choice. Our guide to preparing your pool for summer has a checklist.
How to compare quotes fairly
- Check that each quote covers the same scope.
- Look for a diagnosis or inspection step, not just a fix.
- Check what is excluded, such as draining, refilling, dewatering or rubble removal.
- Ask how long the repair is expected to last and what guarantee applies.
- Ask how extra work will be approved and priced.
- Get it in writing.
Frequently asked questions
Why will you not give me a price?
We are a referral service and contractors set their own prices. We will not publish figures until contractors confirm them in writing.
Should I pay for leak detection before the repair?
Often it saves money, because the repair is aimed at the right spot and there is less guesswork in the quote.
Why do two quotes differ so much?
Usually because they cover different scope, assumptions or materials. Compare line by line and ask each contractor to explain.
