What a pool renovation includes

A renovation is more than a repair. It usually combines several jobs into one project so the pool looks and works like new. Many Cape Town pools were built decades ago, and the shell is often still sound while everything around it has aged.

  • A new surface: re-marbelite, fibreglass relining or another finish.
  • New coping stones and waterline tiles.
  • New or repaired paving around the pool.
  • LED lighting in place of old halogen fittings.
  • A new pump, filter or salt chlorinator sized for the pool.
  • Changes to steps, benches or a shallow ledge.
  • Safety upgrades such as a cover or a compliant fence.

When to renovate rather than repair

Renovation makes sense when repairs keep coming. If the surface is rough, stained and cracked in several places, the coping is loose and the equipment is old, fixing each item one at a time costs more over a few years than doing it together. It also saves draining the pool more than once.

It is also the moment to fix design problems you have lived with: steps that are hard to use, a deep end nobody needs, or a pump that is too big and costs too much to run. If the shell itself is failing, the conversation may move towards rebuilding. See new pool construction.

How a renovation project usually runs

The contractor inspects the shell, the surface, the plumbing and the equipment, then agrees a scope with you. A clear written quote lists each part of the job, so you can see what is included and what is optional.

Most surface work needs the pool drained. That is a planned step: the contractor should check the groundwater situation first, because a high water table can push an empty shell upwards. Many contractors will not drain in the wettest winter months for this reason, and some ask for a pressure relief valve to be checked or fitted.

Cape Town summers are busy for pool contractors. If you want to swim in December, plan in winter or early spring. A renovation planned in July or August is far easier to schedule than one requested in November.

Choosing a new surface

Marbelite (a cement and marble-chip plaster) is the traditional Cape Town finish. Fibreglass relining is applied over the existing shell and gives a smooth, non-porous surface. Each has a different feel, life and maintenance load. Our guide to re-marbelite versus fibreglass relining sets out the differences, and the pool resurfacing page covers the process.

What happens when you send us your renovation

Tell us your suburb, the pool's approximate size and age, its current surface and what you would like changed. Photos help, and the contractor will ask for them. We pass the enquiry to an independent renovation contractor who covers your area. The contractor contacts you, inspects and quotes directly.

We are a referral service and do not carry out renovations. The contractor is responsible for the work, the quote and any guarantee.

Pool renovations in your suburb

Older pool stock in the Southern Suburbs makes renovation a common job there:

What moves the quote

We do not publish prices. The contractor quotes you directly once they understand the job. These are the factors that usually make the difference:

  • The size and depth of the pool, which sets the surface area.
  • The new surface chosen and how much preparation the old one needs.
  • Coping, tiling and paving: how much is replaced and the material.
  • Equipment upgrades: pump, filter, chlorinator, lighting.
  • Draining, groundwater management and refilling.
  • Access for materials and rubble removal.
  • Any structural repairs found once the pool is empty.

Our guide to what moves a pool repair quote in Cape Town explains how to compare quotes fairly.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a pool renovation take?

It depends on the scope, the surface chosen and the weather. Ask the contractor for a timeline in writing, including drying or curing time before refilling.

Does my pool have to be drained for a renovation?

Usually, for surface work. The contractor should check groundwater first and plan the drain, especially in winter or in low-lying areas.

What is the best time of year to renovate?

Late winter to early spring is a good time to plan, so the work is done before the summer rush. Avoid draining during very wet weather.

Can I renovate in stages?

Yes, but some jobs belong together. Coping and surface work, for example, are often best done at the same time to avoid draining twice.

Do you renovate pools yourselves?

No. We are a referral service. An independent contractor who covers your suburb inspects, quotes and does the work.
