Choosing the next surface

Many Claremont pools have been re-marbelited before. Each time, the old surface is prepared and a new layer goes on. At some point owners ask whether to do it again or switch to fibreglass relining. Re-marbelite gives the familiar, natural finish. Fibreglass gives a smooth, non-porous surface that resists algae and can be easier to keep clean under trees. Which is better depends on the shell's condition, how you use the pool and your plans for the house.

Our guide to re-marbelite versus fibreglass relining sets out the trade-offs. The Claremont pool page covers local conditions.

Trees, leaves and the surface

Big trees are part of Claremont's appeal, but leaves stain marbelite, especially when they sink and sit on the floor. Tannins from leaves and seed pods leave brown marks that are hard to shift on a porous surface. If staining is one of your reasons for renovating, mention the trees; it may influence the surface the contractor recommends and whether a cover is worth adding.

What a Claremont renovation often includes

  • New surface, with crack repairs and new fittings where needed.
  • Replacement of loose or chipped coping.
  • Paving repairs where roots have lifted slabs.
  • LED lights and updated electrics by a qualified person.
  • A pump and filter sized for the pool.
  • A leaf cover or safety net.

Access and neighbours

Claremont plots vary, from big gardens to tighter properties with side access only. Materials have to come in and rubble has to leave, so the contractor needs to know the route. On semi-detached or closely built homes, consider telling neighbours before work starts.

Frequently asked questions

Will a new surface stop leaf stains?

A smoother, less porous surface stains less, but leaves still need removing. A cover helps most.

Can roots lift my pool paving?

Yes, over time. The contractor can relay paving and advise on the roots as part of the renovation.

How do materials get in if I only have side access?

Tell the contractor about access when you first make contact. It affects the method and the quote.
