Sand is the pump's enemy

The summer south-easter carries fine sand off the beaches and open ground and drops it into Table View pools. Much of it passes the skimmer basket and ends up in the pump and filter. Sand wears the impeller, scours the mechanical seal and clogs the filter faster, so the pump strains to push water through. A rising pressure gauge, a pump that sounds harsher than it used to, or water around its base are all common results.

Backwashing more often in windy spells and keeping baskets empty helps. When the seal goes or the motor bearings start to rumble, it is time for a repair.

Salt air and electrics

Close to the coast, salty, damp air corrodes motor housings, terminal connections and timer contacts. An earth leakage that keeps tripping, or a timer that stops switching, can be corrosion rather than a failed pump. Electrical faults near water should be checked by a qualified person. Read about local conditions on our Table View pool page.

Faults we often see referred

  • Dripping mechanical seal after sand wear.
  • Rumbling bearings in an older motor.
  • Sand filter clogged or returning sand to the pool from a broken lateral.
  • Corroded connections causing tripping or a dead timer.
  • Salt chlorinator cell scaled or worn out.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my Table View pump wear out so fast?

Wind-blown sand wears seals and impellers, and salt air corrodes metal and electrics. Regular backwashing and a covered pump room help.

My pump keeps tripping the electricity. Is it safe to reset?

Leave it off and have it checked by a qualified person. Repeated tripping near water is a safety issue.

Can sand in my pool come from the filter?

Yes. A broken lateral inside a sand filter can let sand back into the pool. The contractor can check and repair it.
